Market Report: How to Wear Spring Sandals Now

The faults of the fashion retail cycle are never so clearly on display as when the weather insists it’s not going anywhere (see: ongoing torrential rain, snowflakes) but the shopping sites that we assume as allies tell a dramatically different story. One that points towards tropical effortlessness with exclamation marks that look like a crochet skirt and floral dresses, underwear that you might consider for pants if it were not limbs-so-numb-they-could-detach cold and, of course, the footwear.

Sometimes I trap myself so deeply in the fantasies that I conjure when I see a satin pinstriped or raffia and jewel-encrusted sandal that it takes days — weeks! — to pluck myself out.

I’m kidding, that’s dramatic, I’m usually fine within 15 seconds, but the heart wants what it wants. I’d rather buy into the story e-commerce is telling than the reality that weather espouses, so here’s a best attempt at taking spring’s best shoes, introducing them to some funky @$$ socks and turning them, as couples, into the shoes we wear while we wait for Godot (or the artist formerly known as spring) to arrive.
