A
s much as I’ve drooled over the street style in Paris, Milan, London and Copenhagen, I have a special soft spot for the street style that comes out of New York. In many ways it mirrors the persona of the city itself: high-energy and a bit soulful, a sartorial embodiment of why so many people from so many corners of the world pack up their lives and move to the Big Apple to pursue a dream. New York beckons you in with a full-bodied hug. It says, “There’s a place for you here — yes, you” — and so does its street style.
There’s a place for the green polo shirt you stole from your dad seven years ago that still kind of smells like him. There’s a place for the cowboy hat you bought in Nashville on a whim. There’s a place for your burgeoning desire to wear a magenta see-through dress with nothing underneath except a black sports bra and underwear. There’s a place for the patterned tights you’re determined to wear despite 93-degree temperatures. There’s a place for your hustle, your joy, your self-consciousness, your humanness. That’s the thing about New York, and the outfits that pepper its sidewalks every Fashion Week like infinite specks of glitter: It’s for everyone.
With that, I’ll leave you to enjoy the first batch of New York street style in the slideshow above. We’ll be updating it daily with fresh ‘fits, so be sure to keep checking back. If you plan on sharing your favorites in the comment section (which I sincerely hope you do), just know that the numbers of the photos in the slideshow will change every time we refresh it. Oh, and one more housekeeping note while I have you here: Man Repeller’s one-sentence show reviews are migrating this season to a highlight on our Instagram account, which means you can access them live as we post them over the course of the week. Happy ogling!
