Pitti Uomo is a four-day menswear trade show that takes place biannually in Florence, Italy, attracting retailers, editors and influencers from around the world. It also happens to be one of the most underrated street style extravaganzas on the g-dang fashion calendar, if you ask me — a veritable homage to beautiful tailoring, dapper straw hats, cool belts and cool sunglasses galore, not to mention a lesson in how to ride a bike and look impeccable at the same time.
This year’s batch of outfits was no exception. I’m so jazzed about them I want to copy every single one in the below slideshow (captured by photographer Matthew Sperzel), but I’ll start by breaking down the style revelations gleaned from my favorite six. Meet me in the comments to discuss which ‘fits are tickling your personal aesthetic thrill bone.
1. Caftans and Loafers Are the Sartorial BFFs You Never Knew You Always Needed
As both a city-dweller and lover of caftans, I’ve occasionally struggled with the reality that sometimes a caftan-and-sandals combo can almost look…too beach-apropos, which is why the prospect of swapping in loafers has me tickled like a feather in the hands of an ASMR artist.
2. Head-to-Toe Very Dramatic Purple Is a Must
I love how these outfits are soooooo purple and yet not at all lacking in nuance thanks to the dozens of thoughtful details, from variations in shade to the beaded watch chain to the artfully tied kerchiefs. A lesson in how to wear head-to-toe one color, to be sure. Also a lesson in how to twin with someone and act like it’s NBD. A true power move.
3. Ribbon Belts Are Cool Again
I haven’t worn a ribbon belt since seventh grade when obtaining one was the single most important mission occupying my newly teenaged soul. When I finally did, I wore it non-stop with low-rise bootcut jeans and a Lacoste polo. Those were the days! Now I’m taking cues from the above legend and planning to wear one cinched over a blazer over a white blouse, plus some sunglasses that make me look like John Goodman in The Big Lebowski, if I can swing it.
4. There’s No Such Thing as Too Much Gingham
I already knew this, but now I really, really know it. The universe is clearly instructing me to dress like the picnics I want to see in the world, and I’m fully committed to the cause. Drape me in charcuterie, universe!!!! I’ll supply the tablecloth — and the blueberry cobbler.
5. Pajamas Look Superb With Straw Hats
This might be my most favorite outfit of the bunch. It looks comfortable and fun at the same time, which is my sartorial holy grail scenario. I love how she accessorized with pearl earrings, too, thus cementing my fantasy that she simply decided to head out the door wearing exactly what she wore to bed, with the addition of a few thoughtfully curated accouterments.
6. Briefcases and Doc Martens Are the New Business Casual
Don’t you want to walk into a work meeting wearing this? From now on, I want all my office outfits to say, “My briefcase may be small, but my ideas are very much not.”
