I would love to be one of the people who hands out free samples at Whole Foods. I already excel in tasting Whole Foods snacks and feel strongly that I’d enjoy encouraging customers to do the same. It would be like working inside a gigantic gingerbread house’s worth of treats, where my professional duty was to stay abreast of the daily nosh, organic gumdrop by organic gumdrop.
Even though this is not my reality, I’ve discovered the next best thing: ordering Whole Foods snacks on Amazon. Since purchasing Whole Foods at the end of August, Amazon has been gradually making items from Whole Foods’ private label, 365 Everyday Value, available on AmazonFresh. Everyone who’s anyone knows that 365 Everyday Value happens to have some of the best snacks in the biz (the biz of snacks, in case that was unclear). Imagine my delight at the prospect of being able to purchase them with the click of a mouse, without leaving the great indoors.
Over the course of the past few months, I have diligently sampled the Whole Foods offerings on Amazon and I am here to report that they are mostly good, but some are better than good. Below are eight that, in my not-so-humble expert opinion, embody all the important characteristics of a good snack besides deliciousness (low mess, no smell, easy to share).
I saved the best for first, as is my human right. These chocolate-coated coconut chip things are SO GOOD. Also, the ingredient list is short and reassuring (organic coconut, organic cane sugar, organic cocoa powder and sea salt), so I don’t feel like I’m dispensing the processed snack equivalent of mystery meat into my body when I consume a whole bag at a time.
Pretzels are wonderful. Miniature things are wonderful. Combine these two things together and you get something doubly wonderful. That’s just basic snack math.
Nuts are the perfect tide-you-over-to-the-next-meal kind of snack. I don’t particularly love almonds (sue me), but I very much enjoy cashews. Did you know their high levels of oleic acid have been shown to bolster cardiovascular health? I learned that on the internet.
I don’t know about you, but I like a chunky popsicle. By that I mean I like to be able to really chew on some fruit chunks as opposed to feeling like I’m just eating frozen juice. Ergo, these Whole Foods bars are right up my alley. You can actually decipher when you’re tackling a strawberry. Or a piece of mango. Or a nibble of pineapple.
5. Pitted Dates
I’m obsessed with dates. I eat them plain, I put them in smoothies, I sleep with them under my pillow, etc. They are nature’s candy!!!!!! To be honest I prefer the medjool variety, but these guys are a very solid second place contender.
6. Cheese Puffs
Cheese in puffed form is the modern-day version of biblical manna.
These cookies are described on the box as being “dappled” with rich, creamy, organic chocolate chips. The upside is that I can confirm this claim is 100% accurate. The downside is that I’m spoiled now and never want to eat a non-dappled chocolate chip cookie ever again.
Do I need to defend or justify the inclusion of classic salted popcorn on this list? I think not. We’re all decent, law-abiding people here.
