Celeb Look of the Week: Tracee Ellis Ross Understands Lime Green

Welcome to Celeb Look of the Week! A brand spanking new MR column wherein one member of our editorial team, once a week, waxes poetic about one recently worn celeb outfit they can’t stop thinking about. Last week, Leandra kicked things off with an ode to Alexa Chung’s February footwear, and this week, an explanation of why “Tribeca” Tracee is my favorite version of Tracee Ellis Ross.

When it comes to looking good, there are a few people who consistently impress me: Teyana Taylor. Blue Ivy. The chicks behind Norblack Norwhite. Montana Levi Blanco. My girlfriend. And then, of course, there is the GOAT — not only my style icon, but icon in all aspects of life: Tracee Ellis Ross. And it’s time we talk about an outfit she wore on a recent walk through New York City, because it’s time for the second installment of Celeb Look of the Week.

“This outfit is very you,” Haley remarked when I pulled the ‘fit up on my computer screen to show her. Very me indeed. I first realized I was a suit bitch when I saw Kehlani in this orange number back in 2017. My friend Nabi DM’d the post to me, her only commentary being: “you need a suit like this.” Days later, I happened upon an orange suit while thrifting in New Orleans because even the ancestors that walk beside me making magic happen know how important it is that I lean into this identity. Which is why I was overjoyed to see Tracee leaning into it as well while strolling around Tribeca the other day.

Tracee’s suit features a perfect center pleat and relaxed fit. The pants say, “I’m confident, but comfortable and oh so warm!” because there’s no way those aren’t wool. The chunky cuff is *chef’s kiss.* Bold, yet casual. “Give my Louis Vuitton sneakers and one minute of uninterrupted eye contact!” they command, but then they almost contradict themselves with a cool, “But it’s cool if you don’t.” Of course it is. Tracee nor her pants would ever insist on anything without consent.

I know this because she’s Tracee Ellis Ross and also because she’s wearing a belt. Nothing says “deliberate” more than a belt! Except maybe the perfectness of her matching this lime green — or Miranda Hobbes green, as Harling would classify it — turtleneck to the lime green accents in her very expensive sneakers (that hopefully Jeffrey Campbell will soon knock off, for my sake). Or the way her outercoat is slung in between the straps of her perfectly oversized patent leather bag. Or her hoops. Oh God Tracee will you marry me?!

Confession: I used to think Teen Tracee was my favorite, but I think Tribeca Tracee may have replaced her, and now I can’t write any more about this outfit or Tracee because I’m just getting more and more depressed about the fact that we haven’t met IRL yet.
