If we rely on our clothes to invite outward perception, then the stores and bars and restaurants of New York City rely on their chalkboard stands the same way. They invite you in, creep you out, make you think, or smile, or perhaps question everything you have ever believed to be true. I don’t know, but one thing is fo’sho: this summer has proven itself a sidewalk hot bed for stands. They’re everywhere and they’re punny — trying to elicit at least a chuckle in the hopes of enticing you inside.
And if they’re not doing that, they’re at least very honest (see: Pizza is life), but more than anything, as far as I’m concerned, they’re moonlighting as a talisman for these penultimate days of summer. A small token to take with you into the early days of September to remember the iced coffees and rosé wine bottles of yore, before they get folded up and put inside until next year.
