Get to Know Team MR: Emma Bracy, Associate Editor

Emma Bracy is the newest edition to the Man Repeller team. In addition to being MR’s Associate Editor, Emma — an all-around absolute delight who will make you laugh in two seconds flat and is full of endless surprises —  is a Lil’ Kim enthusiast if not expert, prefers matcha lattes or golden milk to coffee, keeps mini Chic-O-sticks in her purse, and could make a horoscope believer out of even the most astrologically suspicious. Let’s meet her, shall we?

You’re the Associate Editor! What does that mean and what do you do?

Wow hi I didn’t know formal questioning would make me nervous but here we are! Being the Associate Editor means that I’m the kind of chick who used to carry a dictionary around with me in school but not like a nerd, more like a cool girl whose “favorite word used to be glossolalia, but is now latrinalia” (I was kind of the worst?). It means I like having multiple tabs open, love a good scoop, am really into studying people, and that there’s a 50/50 chance I will judge your text messages even though I still only write “ur.” I tell stories. I work with words in all the ways.

Where were you before this/doing what?

I was having my first ever transplant experience (New Yorker in the deep south!) fighting institutional racism in grad school at the University of Alabama, hanging out with some of the most brilliant poets and storytellers I’d ever met, learning that New Orleans is the seat of my power. Also freelancing in all things word and storytelling-related.

What did you go to school for?

I went to NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and my concentration was “Identity Fetishism: Perversion of the Void” which just means I was seduced by critical theory (a discipline chock full of old white guys — GO FIGURE!), am very experienced in existential crises and can rationalize my way out of a paper bag.

How did you get started at Man Repeller?

Favorite part of your job?

Mad things! I especially love Harling’s tooth-sucking, Amelia’s typing skills, sitting across from Haley, and the fact that I work with five (FIVE!) other Black femmes. Also Eliz — she’s SO good at market.

Least favorite part of your job?

No nap pods.

Fave thing you’ve written so far and why?

I’m gonna have to say my “gassing” essay for obvious reasons (read it, you’ll see!).

What’s one thing that surprised you in your path up until now?

Waking up every day in Tuscaloosa, Alabama was always a surprise.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

What’s one piece of advice you can offer to someone who wants a job like yours?

Read EVERYTHING (especially Black and queer authors, y’all!), ask lots and lots of questions, write things down. That’s three pieces of advice. Maybe the fourth is don’t forget to flex your math muscles or you’ll end up unable to count, like me.

What’s one piece of advice you have for someone who has no clue what they want to do?

Same advice: Read EVERYTHING (especially Black and queer authors, y’all!), ask lots and lots of questions, write things down.

Tell me something weird about you.

I love SPAM and have two Harry Potter tattoos.

I heard you like Cardi B, is that true?
