In today’s edition of What to Wear This Week, Mercedes Salazar, designer of jewelry brand Mercedes Salazar, breaks down the mechanics of what she wears and why.
What do you think about when you get dressed in the morning?
I always want to feel powerful and strong, so I think about which clothes and jewelry will make me feel like a superwoman.
Do you ask yourself any questions?
Lately I just ask myself which sneakers are the most comfortable! My workdays are long and I love to keep comfortable.
Jewelry must play a huge role in your life. Do you start with earrings first and then build an outfit around them, or do you choose them last based off of what you’re wearing?
There is a wall in my bathroom full of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Sometimes in the morning I will feel connected to a necklace that reminds me of something special or makes me feel powerful, so I usually decide what to wear after choosing the jewelry.
Do the pieces you choose to wear aim to say anything specific?
I believe clothes and jewelry connect you with something special. Your outfit becomes an expression of your energy and who you are.
Where are you from and how does it affect your style, even if it’s in a small way?
I am from Colombia (not Columbia) and I love to wear artisanal, indigenous-style clothing. I use these kinds of colorful pieces very often.
What’s your foolproof styling trick?
High heels, red lips, powerful attitude and huge Mercedes Salazar Fiesta Earrings.
What’s the one garment that never lets you down?
A pair of Mercedes Salazar Fiesta Earrings.
At what point in your life did you really start to come into your own in terms of personal style?
I was 13. I discovered a closet where my mother had stored her most amazing dresses from the 1960s and ’70s. Since that day, I understood the magic behind wearing special pieces.
Where do you look when you are feeling totally “blah” about your wardrobe? What inspires you?
Usually a vintage piece from my grandmother or my mother. I always find the lost power there.
What’s the best song, soundtrack or album to listen to while getting dressed?
Have you discovered any cool brands lately?
What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned in the last week?
To be able to give things away that you don’t need anymore. I learned that my soul needs clean spaces to design and work.
