Oh Boy Episode 49: Teen Comedian Ruby Karp

When Ruby Karp was just seven years old, Amy Poehler tapped her for the comedy vet’s Smart Girls series. The episode was about feminism. At age ten, she started writing for HelloGiggles, and at thirteen, gave her first TED Talk. I say “first” because this young woman is clearly on a roll; she has a book coming out in September called Earth Hates Me, for example. She’s sixteen, by the way.

The daughter of Bust magazine’s co-founder, Ruby grew up around comedians and originally wanted to be a rock star. It’s only in the past few years, with the help of Amy Poehler, that the high school student doubled down on her own brand of comedy. Whatever she ends up being, hers is a podcast episode to remind us all to never discount a teen for her young age. Teens are the future! (Of comedy, of politics, of fashion, of everything.) And they can always teach us something.

Headphones in, enjoy!
