A Human Mermaid Shares Her Rose Gold Hair Routine

Sarah Slutsky is a stylist at the Wall Group, where she’s dressed people like Emma Watson, Elizabeth Olsen, Sophie Okonedo and Jessica Williams. She also happens to have very red and very memorable hair. Read on to hear all about it — and after that, for the hair-o-philes: read about Amelia’s hair, Erica’s hair, Nell’s hair, Shiona’s hair, Simone’s hair, Arabelle’s hair and Megan’s hair. Hair hair hair more hair!

How often do you wash your hair and when?

Usually two times a week, at night before I go to sleep…three times max if I have to!

What’s your hair approach in the shower? What products do you use?

I try to stick to organic stuff. Lately I have been using the Verb Sea shampoo and conditioner — my friend Jacob Rozenberg recently gave me rose gold ends, so I add a bit of pink temporary color to the conditioner in an effort to preserve Jacob’s beautiful work.

What’s your daily routine and how long does it take?

My schedule is bananas, and my hair takes forever to dry and style. The idea is always that if I shower at night, it will dry by morning so I can just touch it up with a big curling iron (I use one from Harry Josh). But alas, I am not a morning person, so unless I know I have appointments or an event at night… I just grab for the surf spray and hope for the best. I do love an “ beach wave/curl,” so when I do manage to have extra time — that’s what I go for.

How often do you get it cut?

Whenever I am feeling inspired or in need of a change. Or whenever Jacob tells me I have to.

Tell me a hair-related memory.

Well, when I decided I wanted rose gold hair, I think it was a tortuous experience for Jacob, who is incredible and kind and truly was determined to make it work. It took a whole day — but I loved the results and wish the color just sprouted from my head.

Have you gone through a bunch of hair phases or had the same hair your whole life?

I’ve pretty much always had long hair. Of course there are the moments where I thought, “I need bangs,” and “Ugh, I’m growing out these bangs and I look crazy,” but basically, I am always trying to be a mermaid!

When do you hate your hair?

When I decide to sleep in and then realize once I get up that my natural waves decided to have a life of their own and I end up looking like I was caught in a rainstorm for the whole day. I really should just get up 30 minutes earlier.

When do you love it?

After I get it blow dried (by Jacob).

What’s the most tragic hair-related decision you’ve ever made?

It’s always bangs. Every time. Inevitably, I will end up with bangs again…

What’s one product you couldn’t live without?

Sea salt spray.

Who first taught you how to do your hair?

Chloe Cooper, one of my oldest childhood friends, bought a flat iron and showed me how to use it.

Have you ever cut your hair yourself?

How has your hair texture changed as you’ve gotten older?

It hasn’t, but I’m hoping someday I will wake up with smooth, natually wavy locks like Blake Lively.

What does your hair dresser tell you to do that you ignore?

Get a silk pillowcase.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to do with it, but still haven’t?

Bleach it totally white-blonde.

What misconceptions do people have about your hair?

People don’t always realize I’m a redhead.
