Market Report: Endless Summer Sandal

There are plenty of reasons to talk yourself out of buying more sandals this deep into the summer. For one thing, it’s a Friday and technically speaking, you’ve got exactly three weekends left before Labor Day cradle robs us of our juvenile but sincere (in the way most youthful things are) summer crush on, you know, summer.

And that, my friends, means one of two things.

(1) You have exactly three weekends to spend the entirety of your paychecks on, like, weekend-long share house deals found through AirBnB or games by the boardwalk where the reward is stuffed animals.

(2) You have exactly every reason to start thinking about fall shopping and, in doing so, deliberately discarding whatever ventilation sandals intend to offer your feet.

But I ask you to reconsider planning ahead, just this one time! Because when we do that, it feels a little like we’re wishing away the current moment, no matter how much we like it. And what’s the impetus there?

There is something profoundly satisfying about satiating the human hunger for something so frivolous it wouldn’t even make sense in the context of your weirdest dreams, so here I invite you to indulge in the reverie of jewel encrusted slippers and cowskin clogs; gold wicker wedges and flat satin slides; some mules rendered in a snake print for the hell of it and practical sandals that say nothing more or less than, “Hey! It’s now, so we’re here, but when you need us in October, slap on some socks and we’re there, too.”

How’s that for a compromise?
