This week’s episode of The Call features trans activist Ashlee Marie Preston. Our conversation took place just a few months after a video of her went viral and thrust her onto the national stage. In it, she confronts Caitlyn Jenner for her public support of Donald Trump despite his administration’s continued attacks on the LGBTQ community.
We talk about this moment and the attention it’s garnered her, but she is so much more than that single, high-profile moment of activism. When I first met her on a panel in LA earlier this month, I immediately had one thought: I need to know her story. And what a story it is.
From growing up as a little black boy in Kentucky to battling addiction in Los Angeles to taking on a role as the first trans woman to lead a major publication, Ashlee Marie has a lot to teach us about answering our call to be our full selves, creating our own realities and fighting injustice with authenticity and fearlessness. Have a listen and take notes.
