I shouldn’t have to risk my life every time I shove my hand into a giant bag to look for lip balm, and yet I’ve never once gone elbow-deep without regretting it. I have been stabbed by a steak knife that I accidentally stole from a restaurant. Other times, I’ve pulled my arm out streaked with blood, nearly fainted as a result and then realized it was just lipstick…trapped, smashed and smeared all over the bottom of my “convenient” giant bag.
“Convenient” because, sure, it fits your desktop computer, but have you ever been able to find your phone in there? Especially when it’s ringing.
But in addition to safety and convenience, I want my bag to nourish me. I want to know that when I pack a lunch (a sandwich, a bag of chips, maybe candy), I’m not going to end up with a SMOOTHIE. Mushed-up bag-flavored banana and turkey. Did you read my fashion week diary? It’s okay if you didn’t but I am always hungry. For this reason, I’m making a stink about my new rule: big bags are out. Suck it, totes.
Small bags as lunch boxes, in.
See this baby? It’s by The Volon. It clashes with every outfit beautifully but more importantly, it’s housing a peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich. No awkward belly growling in this house. And if you’re not a lunch-eater (??) or a snacker, think of the lunch-eater and snacker you could be. The kind who pulls out an avocado in jury duty. The kind who brings hummus in mason jars, homemade pita chips in sandwich baggies, biscuits with smashed up blackberries. The kind who saves money!
You could be the kind of snacker who brings your own pigs-in-a-blanket to the party. The kind of snacker who sneaks cookies into the movie theater. The kind of drinker who pulls a few olives and a celery stalk right out of your colorful, top-handled box and sticks it right into your Bloody Mary.
The options are endless, really, just like your appetite. The only thing that’s limited is the space in your lunch box. I mean purse. It’s ideal. Just don’t eat your keys.
