What to Wear this Week: Stylist Vanessa Lundy

In today’s edition of What to Wear This Week, Vanessa Lundy, fashion stylist in Boston and New York, breaks down the mechanics of what she wears and why.

What do you think about when you get dressed in the morning?

I think about my mood and what I have to do that day.

Do you ask yourself any questions?

Yes. Which pieces, prints or textures speak to my mood? Also, is the outfit appropriate and comfortable for the day’s work?

What comes first: the shoes or the clothes?

Clothes 80% of the time unless it’s a statement shoe that I’m looking to wear.

Do you have any layering rules of thumb?

Start off light (as in, weight of clothes) and work your way up. Ask yourself if each layer compliments the last, as well as if it’s figure-flattering. You don’t want to look stuffed or uncomfortable for the sake of saying you layered.

In what silhouette do you feel most like yourself?

A-line anything.

How does being a stylist impact the way you shop?

It keeps me deliberate throughout the whole process. If I’m interested in a jacket I ask myself 1) Is it great quality? 2) Is it trendy? 3) Can I wear it more than three different ways? Purposeful shopping is always the goal.

Does your style aim to say anything specific about who you are?

I don’t aim for it to say anything. I just dress how I feel and don’t put too much thought into it. Style is an emotion.

Where are you from and how does it affect your style?

I’m originally from Brooklyn and even after many years of living in Boston, I’m still very much a Brooklyn girl. I’m inspired by the culture, the street art, the corner stores and the overall sense of freedom New York allows. Brooklyn taught me that style is majority attitude. Your outfit is nothing if you don’t own it!

What’s the one garment that never lets you down?

High-waist pants. They cinch that waist, honey. Every time!

At what point in your life did you really start to come into your own in terms of personal style?

I’d say my early twenties. For a while I tried to tone down my style so that I wasn’t “too loud.” It was too much effort to try to go against what came naturally to me, so I thought, “[email protected]?$ it, it’s me!”

Where do you look when you are feeling totally “blah” about your wardrobe?

Instagram travel pages, Pinterest interior decor. There’s so much inspiration in color palettes and architecture.

What inspires you?

Dope, resilient women, traveling, prints, N.Y.

What’s the best song, soundtrack or album to listen to while getting dressed?

Beres Hammond’s “Tempted to Touch”, Drake’s “Thank Me Later” album, Moonchild Radio on Pandora and Afro beats playlist on SoundCloud.

Have you discovered any cool brands lately? What are they if so?

Yes, @Zainabsumu
