Welcome to Silver Linings Month

Welcome to Silver Linings Month December 2018 Man Repeller

Holy good moly and constellations of snow, we did it. December is here. Welcome. Truly. After a year that seemed to feel collectively hard, doesn’t this concluding month feel like something of a silver trophy? One where the engraving says something reassuring such as, “Hey, 2018 was not the best, to say the least. But you did great. You are great. And you deserve a deep breath.”

(Shout out to the engraver by the way because that’s a lot of text to fit within this trophy’s designated plaque portion!)

Now, just because you “deserve” a few deep breaths doesn’t mean they’re easy to take. Amid the wobbly chaos of the world, each of us has our own shit that makes everything even more complicated. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned this year, it’s that looking for the silver lining (well-knowing that sometimes it takes a telescope, a magnifying glass, the assistance of a friend’s shoulder to sit upon for a better vantage point, an increased lens prescription, eye drops, and a bit of self-trickery) has the semi-magical ability to make things seem a little better. Not all pieces of coal can be polished into tinsel but there’s something about the act of practicing your polishing that makes it easier to see where the bright sides are already trying to shine.

The added shimmer of the holidays doesn’t hurt, either.

As such, this month on Man Repeller is all about looking for the silver lining. Summon the sparkle in your eyebrow that hasn’t come out since Halloween and join us as we explore the literal and metaphorical sides of what that means. In addition to the emotional side of the theme, count on holiday outfits, silver beauty inspiration, the case for sequins (and sequin alternatives), whether you’re determined to go out and socialize or are actively committed to staying in and getting cozy.

December — on Man Repeller, and off it, too —- is about marveling in the first few sparkly snowfalls (before you get sick of snow forever) and festivities of the dressing and partying variety. It’s about the glow you feel when surrounded by loved ones and the shiver you feel down your spine amid gift-giving excitement. Not to sound like your aunt on Facebook, but it’s about counting blessings. It’s also about decorating, just going wild with garlands while singing the fa la la la las. That’ll help you breathe, you know — singing loudly and what not. It helps your breath find a rhythm.

And should you have any sort of trouble warming up, there’s always hot chocolate. Cold weather’s eternal silver lining.
